‘The United Nations Charter, international law, and multilateralism are under threat,’ Rodriguez warned.

On Monday, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez expressed alarm over the rise of neo-fascism and the rollback of policies supporting vulnerable groups in the West.

“We are deeply concerned about the advance of conservative and neo-fascist platforms and how, in developed countries, there has been a decades-long regression in fundamental rights, including women’s equality, sexual and reproductive rights, and the rights of Afro-descendants, ethnic minorities, and migrants,” he stated.

“The right to life is in grave danger. The United Nations Charter, international law, and multilateralism are under threat, while economic coercion and political subversion are being imposed as methods of international relations,” Rodriguez warned.

During the opening of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Cuban minister urged the Council— which on Monday began six weeks of debates on global crises and conflicts— to “advocate more strongly for a just and democratic international order that guarantees world peace and balance.”

Rodriguez also pointed to the United States, which withdrew from the Human Rights Council during Donald Trump’s presidency, accusing it of being “an active accomplice in the Israeli genocide in Gaza” and of exerting decades of maximum pressure on Cuba through its blockade.

“There is extensive evidence showing that the U.S. government has allocated millions of dollars from the federal budget through entities like USAID to finance organizations, media outlets, artificial intelligence laboratories, and technological platforms that use the facade of human rights protection,” he said.

“In reality, they serve the political and legitimate objectives of that government. This is a serious and relevant issue for this Council and its mandate, as it demonstrates the double standards and opportunism with which human rights have been used to subvert sovereign governments,” Rodriguez asserted.
